Myth busting - agent learns how to avoid work-at-home scams

MYTH: Work at home and flexible schedules? Sounds too good to be true.

Work-at-home has gotten a bad reputation, particularly before the COVID-19 pandemic. There are many bad actors out there trying to take advantage of people that are looking for earnest ways to earn an income from their homes. However, there are many more legitimate opportunities than there are scams, you just need to watch out for the red flags (Check out this page of tips and resources to avoid recruiting scams).

One red flag is to accept or pay money to the business before you start working. This is different than paying for your own business costs in an independent contractor or gig model

As an independent contractor, you’ll have to supply your own equipment (computer, telephone, headset) or other services required to run your business (internet, electricity, etc). In the case of Liveops, this also includes a self-funded background check through a third party.

These costs are an investment in your business (be sure to keep your receipts, come tax time!) As your own boss, you also get to decide which equipment you use in your daily work! As long as it complies with the company’s eligibility requirements, the headset that is most comfortable for you is completely your choice.

Some contractor positions require additional fees for using their platform, or to take a training program (note, Liveops does NOT have platform, certification, or termination fees). Be sure to do your due diligence on these organizations before you commit to ongoing costs. Reach out to the company, investigate their website, look at reviews and look at their social media channels. With a little bit of research, you can protect yourself from fraudulent activity and also get a look into what that opportunity could be like.
